Atherton's Chinatown, located at 86 Herberton Road, just outside the business centre of Atherton, is the site of the restored Hou Wang Temple.

This historic building survived the ravages of time thanks to a group of local Chinese families who purchased the land and, over the years, protected the temple as best they could.

Guided tours are conducted at the Atherton Chinatown site daily from 10am to 4pm (except Christmas Day and Good Friday).

Excellent interpretive displays provide an insight into the harsh conditions of migrant Chinese life during the pioneer days of the Cairns district, as well as their unique form of worship.

Just one and one quarter hour's drive from Cairns along a scenic, fully sealed multi-laned highway this site is a "must see" for anyone interested in the history of the Atherton district.
