Drive out,
or take a guided tour, to the slag heap for a close-up look at
the remains of the Chillagoe Smelter.
Whether you are a mining history buff or not, you will be
hard-pressed not to be stirred by these fascinating ruins.
The site will undoubtedly evoke thoughts of yester-year as you
picture in your imagination the bustling scene as it would have
been, peopled with workers and management, in the early years of
the twentieth century.
To get to the smelter site head north along Queen Street (the
main street) and continue a short distance out of town where a
well signed road turns off to the right. Follow this road past
the Chillagoe Limeworks site where the smelter chimneys will come
into view.
Be
sure to pick up a copy of the map of the Chillagoe area from The
Hub as it gives clear directions to these attractions and other
places of interest.
Guided tours of the smelter site can also be booked at The
Hub.
