On the foreshore of the Endeavour
River in Cooktown, just down stream from Cook's Memorial Park, there
stands a memorial to the June 1770 landing of Captain James
Cook.
Approximately in the very spot where the Endeavour was made
fast to the shore, the huge granite boulder stands as a permanent
testimony to the courage and determination of the British officers and
crew aboard the damaged Endeavour, who over a period of nearly seven
weeks, made the ship seaworthy and resumed their voyage of
discovery.
On display in the Cooktown Museum is the remains of the tree,
which it is
claimed, Cook tied the Endeavour to.
