Mrs Watson's Monument, located in
Charlotte Street, Cooktown, stands as a tragic testimony to
the harsh conditions women and children endured during the early
days of Cooktown's development.
Called the Heroine of Lizard Island, Mrs Watson and her
infant son, Ferrier, as well as two Chinese servants, tragically
lost their lives at Lizard Island during an altercation with the
local mainland Aborigines who were defending their traditional
land.
Mrs Watson's grave is located at the Cooktown cemetery.
