Located at the same site
as the Herberton Mining Museum and Visitor Information Centre is the Great Northern
Reward Claim.
The site includes the 24 hectares (60 acres)
of land which William Jack and John Newell were allowed to purchase as a
reward claim for their discovery of the tin deposits at Herberton.
Within the Herberton Mining
Centre precinct a superb physical record of the Great Northern's history
has survived. It contains both The Gully, in which alluvial tin was
discovered and, nearby, the site of the first lode tin discovered in
Australia.
A clearly marked walking trail allows the visitor to see first hand, the remains of the mine buildings and shafts. Signs with information and photgaphs
explain to the visitor the historical relevance of what they are
viewing.
