Lake Barrine
is a unique piece of tropical paradise surrounded by some of the
most beautiful World Heritage listed rainforests in the
world.
The lake is actually the crater of an extinct volcano which, over
the years, has filled with rainwater and is now approximately 65
metres deep.
Located near Malanda just an hour's drive from Cairns via
the scenic Gillies Highway, Lake Barrine has enjoyed an
eco-tourism status for nearly one hundred years.
In 1934, Lake Barrine was gazetted as national park and in 1988
it was included within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
In 1994 it joined nearby Lake Eacham under the one name —
Crater Lakes National Park.
Lake Barrine is also the site of the internationally recognised
tourist attraction, the Lake Barrine Tea House and Heritage
Cottage, and Rainforest Cruise.
