Denis O'Brien is listed as hotel keeper of the North Australian in Willmett's Almanac of Queensland from 1878.  It was originally called the Reefer's Arms in keeping with the port's gold mining association.
The two story building of today replaces the single story hotel destroyed by the big cyclone of 1911.
